4allTeX version 4: what's new?
A short list of some significant changes since version 3
- In stead of one texuser.set you now get an OS-specific file:
texuser.dos, texuser.w31,
texuser.w95 or texuser.nt.
Likewise you get: 4texdos.bat, 4texw31.bat,
4texw95.bat or 4texnt.bat to startup.
- 4TEX can now "start" programma's in Windows95/NT concurrently.
- When quiting 4TEX you have the option to automatically "kill" Windows
programs that were started.
- 4TEX no longer supports computers with CPUs lower than 80386. Therefore,
all TeX format files are available only in "big" and "huge".
- Some "features" were stripped to gain performance: "loadhi" is not
supported any more; no more mouse support in menus; no lowered 4 and E;
"mark" and "release" are not needed anymore.
- The spell-checker now also supports South African and the new Dutch
spelling.
- Improved support for a larger set of editors, both console-based and
pure Windows. Around 20 shareware and freeware editors are now shipped
with 4TEX.
- The new 4DOS version 6.00 is now used.
- Chinese LaTeX (CJK) with Big5 encoding is now fully supported.
- Specifying "null" as main TeX file now implies interactive TeX: the
"TeX prompt".
- Devirtualizing is now part of the output menu. If running on a Win32
platform dvicopy from the Web2c implementation is used (faster and more
reliable).
- New DVI-viewers under Windows: GSview and DVIwin.
- TSE editors 2.5, 2.8 and Jr. 4.0 are now recognized and fully supported
with macros.
- Documentation in HTML format can be viewed by DOSlynx, Arachne, Opera,
Netscape, Internet Explorer or any other browser you prefer.
- The Metapost menu is much improved. All graphics can be viewed now.
- The installation script is extended and improved a lot.
- Through Ghostscript (5.03) 4TeX can now produce PDF!
- The free AMS versions of the CM and AMS fonts in Type 1 now replace the
older BaKoMa fonts.
- 4TeX now supports conversion from anyTeX to HTML through TeX4ht. The
HTML version of the 4TeX manual was produced that way.
- The ConTeXt format (Hans Hagen, Pragma) is fully supported (English, Dutch
and German interfaces are available).
- Gnuplot is now incorporated as a utility program.
- Other new utilities: LaTeXmac (insert "difficult" symbols, math and
LaTeX environment directly into your editor); LaTeX 2e Help file;
LaTeXcad (for making LaTeX drawings); PageDraw (making drawing in
EPS format).
- All 35 standard PostScript fonts are now supported on all
printer types.
- All directories on both CD-ROMS contain "index.htm" from which your
WWW browser can access all of the CD-ROM.
- If you use Web2c (from any platform) you can use the LS-R file in
the emTeX directory to get fast access to any file on the CD-ROM.
- The CD-ROMS are ISO-9660 compliant, with Joliet extensions. Users
of Windows 95 or Windows NT will be able to see "long file names".
